THOUGHTS OF LAST FLAT SEASON 2022 AND THIS FLAT SEASON 2023.

The 2022 flat season for MPR was one of the most memorable seasons I can remember. If it was sprinters, middle distance. But the 2yr olds horses took centre stage. I’ve been with MPR now for sixteen years. I can not remember how successful the 2yr Olds have been. The highlight for me was The Platinum Queen winning the Prix De L’Abbaye, also breaking the track record at Goodwood. Other highlights were Eddie’s Boy winning the Wetherby’s Super Sprint and Shouldvebeenaring (Great Name) winning the Listed Ripon Champion 2yr Old Trophy also Premier Yearling sales race at York.

This season. I’m looking forward once again to the 2yr olds, especially looking at the new sires for this year. Who MPR have bought for this flat season. And it’s not been easy this year for my one to watch for the MPR flat horses. So, I’ve selected eight horses to follow. Six 2yr Olds to keep a look out for. Two 3yr Olds to look out for who I think might improve from 2yr Old to 3yr Old flat season campaign. I hope you enjoy the blog. City Light ex Jeune Et Jolie Filly Named: DENRUTH DIAMOND Trained By Rod Millman

Rod Millman has very good success with last year’s 2yr old Cuban Mistress. Hopefully, the success will continue with this City Light sire 2yr old in his stable. The stallion City Light had a very good career in his own right. He won Qatar Prix Du Pin Group 3, Prix De Saint Georges Group 3, and second in two Group 2’s races, respectively. Watching a video of Rod Millman’s gallops, she looks like she is all speed to my eye but won’t be surprised could run in 6 furlongs races. As the trainer Rod Millman says 🗣”She is a good mover.” That is the key for sprinters. I asked James Millman son of Rod Millman and part of the Racing TV team about the City Light Filly (Denruth Diamond), James says 🗣”It’s early days but she is doing everything right so far. Looks a nice strong sprinting type. ”

Karl Burke had success with a few MPR horses last year, especially with Silky Wilkie. Hopefully, this flat season this fella will do well for his trainer and owners. The Unfortunately (That’s For Sure) colt has taken my eye by watching his gallops on YouTube. I can see him running in 5 furlongs or 6 furlongs races. Also, I think he could run on the ground in good or good/firm conditions. Trainer Karl Burke had a few things to say with That’s For Sure. He said 🗣”He’s moving well, and I was pleased with how he went on the gallops so far.” He adds🗣”He’s strengthened up a lot through the neck area.” Plenty to look forward to this flat season.

The sire of Soldiers Call was at the time trained by Archie Watson, so he knows the sire very well. Looking at this filly pedigree on the dam side, Coconut Kisses is out of Bahamian Bounty, so this young filly would like a bit of cut in the ground. Running on good ground (soft side). Also, her pedigree is speed, so she won’t be surprised by her running in 5 furlongs to 6 furlongs races. Archie Watson spoke about Defying Orders filly, and he says quoted 🗣”She looks very well, and I think she is ready to run in April.” Also, he says 🗣”I can see her as an early season filly. She will start over 5 furlongs and probably stay at that distance. She is all speed.” It will be how well she does this season and wonder if she could be amongst the famous fillies that MPR has had in previous years in the famous light blue and orange silks like the fillies of The Platinum Queen, Lily’s Angel, Latenightrequest, Ventura Mist, Esentepe, Clem Fandango, Ventura Diamond, Wedding Date etc.

Detroit Lion is from a classic sire of Awtaad. I was very lucky to be at Richard Hannon’s stable. Watching him walking around a makeshift pre-parade ring in the yard. He looked relaxed walking around and was not spooked at anything, which is a great sign. But when I saw him in the wash-down area with his owners. He was so behaved and relaxed and not a bother to anyone. He has a good mind and a lovely looking 2yr old. I think he will be one to watch. He’s bred to race 6 furlongs to 1 Mile a 2yr/3yr old. Even top bloodstock agent Ross Doyle commented and said 🗣” He’s a stand out in the sales.” Richard Hannon said to me 🗣”It’s way too early to say how he is.” 🗣”What I see he is doing well.” For me personally, I can see him winning some races. But he will be better as a 3yr old. There’s is plenty of growth to fill his frame. Watch this space. He could be another good wide receiver for the team in light blue and orange silks.

This is a lovely looking grey colt and was purchased at the Geoffs Premier Yearling Sales. Muhaarar has started well already has a winner in a top festival. That was Dare To Share that won in the Wetherby’s Champion Bumper race at the Cheltenham Festival. But looking at his pedigree, we could see him in six furlong races at the start of his career. But I think he will progress going up in distances like seven furlongs to a mile races. This horse is under the very capable trainer Richard Fahey. Who last season he had the very good filly of The Platinum Queen. Who had a very successful season under Richard Fahey. It will be interesting how he does with Richard Fahey in his 2yr Old career.

Almanzor was a Champion European colt for three year old 2016. This colt is the half-brother to the dual group one winner Watch Me. He has got middle distance plus stamina in his pedigree all over. Also, looking in the pedigree, there are two stand-out sires as well on both sides of his pedigree, which they are Wotton Bassett and Galileo, respectively. I can see him in top middle distance races and also racing in top French races as well. Also, he’s with top trainers in care as well with John and Thady Gosden touch wood he will do well in his 2yr old career.

What a fantastic season this horse has brought to the owners last flat season. He was my last season’s One To Watch blog. Now he’s in my 3yr old blog write up how he will progress in his 3yr old campaign this flat season. Shouldvebeenaring won his first race at Ripon and never looked back. He’s won some very good races last season like the Premier Yearling Sales, and he won Ripon Two Year Old Trophy as well. This season, he will compete in the top six furlong races like at Royal Ascot plus other racetracks as well. The owners will have some more success with this, fella, for sure. In the famous Group 1 Light Blue and Orange silks.

PRINCE OF PILLO

Prince Of Pillo is from the sire of Prince of Lir. He’s been a fantastic horse as an 2yr old last season, winning good races like Hornblower at Ripon and also winning Rosebery listed stakes at Ayr at the distance of 5 furlongs races. In which he has picked up good black type races in his cv along the way. Also finished third place in a very good Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket. This season, I think he will get more black type races, especially since he will be running in top races in top racetracks, including running at Royal Ascot, Goodwood Festival, etc. His ground conditions for him this season will be roughly the same as last time running on Good or Good to Firm ground. He could be another top sprinter in the colours of the Light Blue and Orange. One To Watch this season.
